structured blogging

The people who run PubSub.com did some thinking about the future of blogging and came up with a beautiful idea: structured blogging.

As I understand it, it means that your blogging software offers specific fields for specific forms of content. For example, when writing a review of some book or movie, stuctured blogging could offers fields like “title” or “rating”. For event-type posts it could offer fields like “date” or “type of event (concert, political, ...)”.

The idea is that the XML code that results from this new kind of posts can be used to create new applications. Also, search engines could offer options like “only search in reviews” or “only search for events”, thereby creating better search results. The advantage for the blogger lies in the enhanced functionality that’s offered by the additional input fields.

Sounds like a very cool idea to me. I think that the usability of the implementation in the different blogging systems will (amongst other factors) determine if the concept will become widely accepted. Users will accept and use new input fields in their blogging software if they get the idea. They shouldn’t have to know anything about the underlying technology (XML,...).

Structured blogging is already available for Wordpress, btw (the plugin can be downloaded here). Several other blogging tools (Moveable Type, Drupal, Reger.com) have promised support.

Head over to structuredblogging.org to see some examples and read more about structured blogging. I myself can’t wait to see some cool new web2.0 – type applications built on top of this concept.
